Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Sitting in 545 acres of national parkland, with thick forest carpeting the craggy peaks of the Sintra Mountains all around, it’s fair to say that Penha Longa boasts a pretty spectacular location.

Rooms at Penha Longa

Penha Longa’s rooms and suites are extremely luxurious yet tasteful and minimalist. The colour scheme is made up of muted greys and earth tones, while all rooms feature private balconies or verandas overlooking the resort’s gardens and the countryside beyond. Stay in a Deluxe Natural Park room and you’ll enjoy a complimentary tour of the 14th-century Penha Longa Monastery. The larger Suites boast separate living areas and the best views over the palace and the forest. In your beautiful marble bathroom, you’ll find luxury Asprey toiletries.

Food & Drink

With no fewer than eight top-class restaurants, the only thing getting between you and a delicious meal at Penha Longa is deciding where to eat. The jewel in the crown is Lab, a Michelin-starred outfit every bit as experimental as its name suggests; chef Sergi Arola takes you on a gastronomic journey through tapas, meat and fish dishes. At Spices, a pan-Asian menu brings you the tastes of Japan, India, Thailand and China, while the sleek Arola offers contemporary Portuguese cuisine to a DJ soundtrack. Among the resort’s other dining options is Midori, the oldest Japanese restaurant in Portugal.

Facilities

Penha Longa has one of the best spas in Portugal, a beautiful space incorporating treatment rooms, swimming pools and waterfalls scattered across peaceful gardens. You’ll also find a yoga platform, ‘meditation labyrinth’, and two separate gazebos for meditation. Spa treatments include citrus body wraps, golf massages and facials.

Activities at Penha Longa

The resort is home to one of Europe’s premier golf courses, 27 holes set amid smooth greens, dense forest and crumbling ruins. If, like Mark Twain, you believe golf to be a good walk spoiled, there’s plenty else to keep you occupied here. A guided historical circuit of the resort will see you visit the ruins of the monastery, built here in the 1300s, and other ancient buildings, while hiking, cycling and jeep tours are all great ways to explore the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Foodies will love the cataplana cooking workshops and the opportunity to visit the local market with one of Penha Longa’s creative chefs.
