1 nightORIENT EXPRESS

A truly unforgettable way to journey between London and Venice, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a collection of beautifully restored train carriages from the 1920s, 30s and 50s. A historic British Pullman train will take you from London to Folkestone before a Continental train of 1920s sleeper carriages take over from Calais to Venice. This is the height of luxurious train travel, with world-class service, magnificent food in the restaurant cars and supremely comfortable sleeper compartments. There’s even a bar car complete with a piano, cocktail bar and lounge area. Be prepared to dress up: the dress code is smart casual during the day, and at least a dark suit with tie for men in the evening – black tie is most appropriate.

The journey departs London Victoria in late morning and arrives in Venice the evening of the following day, taking in beautiful scenery as it passes through Switzerland, Austria and into Italy.

3 nightsVENICE

Arriving into Venice in the early evening, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, the Belmond Hotel Cipriani. Overlooking Piazza San Marco from the island of Giudecca in the Venetian Lagoon, the hotel is reached by private launch and has long held its place among the most exclusive and luxurious hotels in the world. A gondola tour is a brilliantly atmospheric way to experience Venice’s famous winding waterways, while back on dry land an expert guide can take you on a tour of some of the city’s famous historical sights and some lesser-visited attractions. Starting in the Piazza San Marco, you’ll visit places like the Basilica San Marco, Clock Tower, and Doge’s Palace, as well as Marco Polo’s House and the Teatro Maliban.

When you’re in need of refreshment, check out Harry’s Bar: storied home of carpaccio and the Bellini cocktail, and opened by the same Giuseppe Cipriani as your hotel.

After three nights in Venice it’s time for another memorable rail journey, this time boarding the high-speed ‘Ferrari’ Italo train for a two-hour journey to Florence. The birthplace of the Renaissance, with no end of artistic treasures and home to delicious Tuscan cuisine and wine, Florence is truly one of the highlights of any trip to Italy. You’ll be spending three nights at JK Place Firenze, an elegant contemporary hotel in the peaceful Piazza Santa Maria Novella in the heart of Florence.

A gastronomic walking tour is a fantastic way to see the sights, stopping off at the Palazzo Vecchio, the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio interspersed with coffee tasting, homemade gelato, aperitifs and crostini. A visit to the Galleria dell'Accademia is unmissable, with the most famous sculpture in the world – Michelangelo’s David – one of several Michelangelo works on display, alongside Gothic and Renaissance paintings from the collections of the Medici.
