Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Hotel Flatey is nestled in the village of the same name, where you can step back in time and experience traditional rural life in Iceland.

Rooms at Hotel Flatey

Hotel Flatey’s guestrooms are basic and traditional, but comfortable. The old-fashioned air is emphasised by cast-iron radiators, wood-panelled walls and a proliferation of lace doilies, all of which lends a rather Victorian air to proceedings, but which fits in with the surroundings of the old village perfectly. Bathrooms are shared with other guests on your floor, but you’ll find a sink and mirror in your room.

Food & Drink

The cuisine at Hotel Flatey is arguably the hotel’s prime attraction; like everything else here, it’s traditional, simple, and done well. Expect to find plenty of bounty from the surrounding ocean, such as blue mussels and seafood tacos, as well as local caviar and grilled lamb. Food is accompanied by home-baked bread and treats such as delicious cakes and pastries.

Facilities

The hotel’s unique charm revolves around its heritage status and old-fashioned nature, but you’ll have everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Activities at Hotel Flatey

Flatey is a tiny island, which is only inhabited during the summer, and a stay here is about getting off the beaten track and enjoying the village’s quaint architecture, the sense of quiet, and the rugged beauty of the island and its coastline. The village’s church dates back to 1926 and is home to some beautiful frescoes. Birdwatchers will enjoy the chance to spot seabirds such as arctic terns and puffins, while on dry land you’re likely to see more sheep than you are humans.
