Deplar Farm

Deplar Farm is a converted 3,000-acre sheep farm in the remote Fljot Valley, nestled in the mountains of the Troll Peninsula in northern Iceland. The valley sees some of the highest average snowfall in the world, making it a perfect skiing destination.

There are 12 suites and one bunk room (which is ideal for families and groups). They feature local materials such as stone from nearby rivers, black timber and grass roofs, and the interiors showcase a neutral palette with pops of colour, and come with TVs, mini-bars, carefully curated Eleven playlists and bathrooms with steam showers. Some have loft bedrooms with swaying hammocks. Blackout blinds ensure a good night’s sleep in the land of the Midnight Sun.  

The floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies and patios make the most of the panoramic mountain, lake and river views.

The chefs serve up gourmet dishes with a farm-to-table philosophy showcasing fresh ingredients from the local natural larder – such as Arctic char, north Atlantic salmon and mountain lamb - which you can enjoy in the dining room overlooking the mountains.

Follow your meal with drinks at the poolside bar, including warming Viking cocktails, locally-brewed craft beers and handpicked wines from the wine cellar. The bar’s wraparound deck overlooks the pool, the lake and the river.

After a day’s adventures, there are plenty of ways to unwind, including a steam room, indoor and outdoor saunas and hot tubs, flotation tanks and yoga, with a masseuse on hand to soothe any aching limbs. There’s also a gym, and personalised workouts can be arranged. Meanwhile, you can swim under the Northern Lights in the geothermal indoor/outdoor pool - you can put floats on your wrists and ankles so you can float as you enjoy the views. 

The library has books on the local area and its wildlife, and there’s a media room with comfy couches, a TV, a projector and games. If you’re a budding musician, the loft space above the bar has a stage equipped with instruments for spontaneous band nights or karaoke sessions.

Alternatively, simply relax by the fireplace in the lounge or on the outdoor deck, overlooking the incredible Icelandic landscapes, with the Northern Lights in winter being the icing on the cake.

It’s all about mind-blowing activities here – and Deplar Farm provides all the gear you need as well as expert guides. In summer go hiking, biking and horse riding around the dramatic landscapes, or go paddleboarding, surfing and whale watching in the Atlantic Ocean. In winter, go snowmobiling, sea kayaking and heli-skiing near the Arctic Circle (the hotel has two heli-pads).

Experience skiing on the beautiful Troll Peninsula, whose steep slopes take you all the way to the ocean. However, if you’re not an experienced skier, with over 1,500 square miles to choose from, there will be a terrain for your skill level, and your guide will select the right one for you.

You can also enjoy a guided tour of Puffin Island, explore the area by jeep or helicopter, visit geothermal hot springs or go on a photography tour.
