Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Located in the heart of Kurashiki’s historic Bikan quarter, Ryokan Kurashiki is converted from centuries-old farm buildings but blends the ancient and the modern inside, with a mixture of traditional and modern accommodations.

Rooms at Ryokan Kurashiki

Kurashiki has a range of room options which differ in size and style. Matsu can accommodate up to four guests and are decorated in a cosy, modern style, while Higashi, converted from a 260-year-old rice granary, is traditionally Japanese in style. Kura is spread over two floors in a maisonette style, is converted from an Edo-era tool shed, and houses up to six guests – as does Okuzashiki, the most luxurious room in the innermost part of the ryokan.

Food and drink

In the evening, you’ll feast on kaiseki, a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner featuring a series of small, exquisitely prepared dishes. Dinners use fresh seafood ingredients harvested from the Seto Inland Sea, and are served in the privacy of your own room. Traditional Japanese breakfasts are served in the dining room overlooking the garden, and as set lunch menu is also on offer in the restaurant.

Facilities

The hotel has a traditional furo bath which is not available for public use but may be reserved. There is also a private terrace and garden where you can relax with a cup of matcha tea, and the hotel’s friendly staff will be happy to help arrange local excursions and tickets for attractions and museums.

Activities at Ryokan Kurashiki

The Bikan quarter of Kurashiki is one of Japan’s most picturesque and best preserved old towns, and is right on your doorstep. At the Archaeological Museum, housed in an old, whitewashed earthen storehouse, artefacts from the surrounding area are on display including prehistoric tools and ancient bronze bells. Ohashi House, which dates from 1796, is a brilliantly-preserved merchant house and the former seat of a powerful local family, and the Japan Toy Museum is home to a remarkable collection of toys from rural Japan spanning the era from 1603 to 1989.
