Wannabe Indiana Jones-es who want to uncover the mysteries of the Khmers.
Alila Sothea is in a quiet location, just 10 minutes from Siem Reap International airport, and equally close to the cultural centre of Siem Reap.
You’ll feel like royalty when you stay at Aila Sothea (particularly in the King or Queen suites which have personalised butler services!) As you step out onto your balcony you’ll see the peaceful courtyard below, reflective waterways, and an enormous pool lined with shimmering gold leaf. Continuing this feel, the 39 rooms are reminiscent of traditional Khmer villas, with intricately carved dark wood, and a regal choice of colours. King suites also have in-suite spa area with a double Jacuzzi and two massage beds.
Guests at Alila Sothea dine in style beneath glittering lanterns, enjoying traditional dances on the courtyard, and watching the chefs prepare delicious dinners. The cuisine is reflective of Cambodia’s rich heritage, combining authentic Khmer flavours with French influences.
The best way to kick off your Siem Reap discovery is by watching the sun rise over the magnificent Angkor Wat, just 15 minutes from Alila Southea by tuk-tuk or taxi. This is just one of the magical temples to be found in the world heritage archaeological park, some so ancient that towering trees have grown right through them. In the unlikely event that you get sick of exploring temples, Siem Reap itself is a small and interesting place to explore, with a night market that’s strung with colourful fairy-lights and the handicrafts of remote village dwellers. If the weather’s not too hot and sticky you can take a gentle cycle along the flat roads, and see the stilted houses on the Tonle Sap lake.
For a truly ethereal experience head an hour or so out of Siem Reap to Kbal Spean. In the middle of the jungle and submerged beneath a gushing river you will glimpse deities carved into the rock (along with hundreds of regimented phallic symbols!)
