Perfect for

Where

In the world heritage site of Cuzco, Peru.

Rooms at Casa Cartagena

The luxury suites combine funky Perspex furniture with traditional Peruvian fabrics, and have inviting bath-tubs for a relaxing soak, but most importantly the rooms all include high-tech oxygen systems. Oxygen is pumped through a ventilator above the bed to provide a good night’s sleep, and help you get acclimatized to the high altitude. There’s also an oxygen supply on the bedside table to use whenever you feel like it.

Food and facilities

The La Chola restaurant has a claim to fame, being located on the site of a famous hangout for the artists, poets and authors of Peru’s thriving literary scene (Pablo Neruda was apparently a regular). Dishes are contemporary Peruvian and internationally based, and there’s a well stocked wine cellar. The Qoya spa is modern and sophisticated, with an impressive hydrotherapy bath featuring great views of the city. There’s a floor just for men and one for women, with a range of massage and other treatments available. There’s also a fair-trade design store on site.

Activities at Casa Cartagena

When you’re not lounging in the spa, or the elegant terrace bars at Casa Cartagena, the nearby Plaza de Armas is the perfect place to start exploring Cuzco. In the main square you will find a fascinating mix of Inca heritage, and Colonial and Renaissance architecture.

In the know

The nearby artisan neighbourhood of San Blas is a great place to pick up handcrafted souvenirs.
