Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail Thumb

Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail

A testimony to the genius of the Inca civilisation: it’s the stunning Andean setting that makes Machu Picchu so mind blowing. To get there you can walk the Inca Trail and camp, or if you want to avoid the crowds you can follow lesser known routes up to Mountain Lodges of Peru. Don’t think you’re up to the trek? The luxurious Hiram Bingham train is an unforgettable way to see Machu Picchu: spending a night within the Inca city itself and exploring the complex in greater detail the following day.

Amazon Thumb

The Amazon in Peru

Pulsating with wildlife, and plants straight out of sci-fi films, Peru’s Amazon basin spans more than five million acres. If you’re lucky enough to explore it, the best way to do it is aboard an Aqua Expeditions cruise. With these wonderfully luxurious vessels, you’ll pass virgin rainforest, canoe along murky tributaries, and spot caiman, three toed sloth, and the mesmerising pink river dolphin. Back on “dry” land are the rustic rainforest lodges of Puerto Maldonado where you can wobble your way over rope bridges, and take a nocturnal safari amongst jungle croaks and hums.

Cuzco Thumb

Cuzco

At an altitude of 3,380m, beautiful Cuzco crackles with energy as the capital of the Incas, and nexus of their many trails. Wandering the cobbled streets, and Plaza de Armas, you’ll discover how 16th century conquistadors built their cathedrals on gargantuan Inca foundations, and deepened the mystery of their enigmatic predecessors. Where to stay? Monasterio has intelligent oxygen systems in the rooms which you’ll really appreciate when acclimatising to the high altitude, whilst exquisite La Casona gives you the chance to stay in former conquistador’s mansion.

Sacred Valley Thumb

Sacred Valley

Just outside Cuzco, the Sacred Valley of the Incas is a stunning spot dotted with tiny villages and ancient Inca towns. Those in search of adventure can raft down the Urubamba River, and go trekking, riding, mountain biking and paragliding. As for the ruins of Ollantayambo and Pisac, they may not be the scale of Machu Picchu but are some of the best preserved examples of Inca town planning you’ll see. Explore the Incan water ducts, watch-towers, tunnels, and other incredible feats of engineering, and for a great day trip you can cycle downhill to the Salinas de Maras salt pans.

Arequipa and Colca Canyon Thumb

Arequipa and Colca Canyon

Arequipa is filled with handsome colonial architecture, and is well worth exploring before the journey to the stunning Colca Canyon. A real highlight is the Santa Catalina Convent with its orange-draped cloisters, and silent nuns pacing the courtyards. As for Colca Canyon it’s more than twice as deep as its more famous US counterpart, and is a mecca for alpine adventure and relaxation. Horse ride alongside the canyon, white water raft, or trek to farming communities living on the Inca terracing. Finally, spa lovers can soak in Colca’s natural hot springs with fantastic scenery stretching out beyond, and the famous condors soaring on the thermals above. Magical.

Peruvian Coast Thumb

Peruvian Coast

A backpacker favourite, Peru’s coastline is up and coming, but still wonderfully undeveloped. This, combined with warm weather all year round, is great if you’d like a few days of R & R after a hectic Peruvian adventure. Think sleepy fishing villages with excellent seafood, fantastic surfing (the locals maintain the sport originated here, having invented reed surf boards), and dune buggy rides in the flanking desert. For stylish beach bums in search of a luxury surfing pad, check out the DCO Suites.
