An archipelago of volcanic islands formed some six million years ago, the Galapagos are made up of 18 main islands around 997km from continental Ecuador.
Isabela is the largest island in the Galapagos with an area of around 4600 square kilometres. Isabela has the largest tortoise population and also has the only volcano which visitors can climb.
The island of Santa Cruz hosts the largest human population in the Galapagos and is also home to the Charles Darwin Research Station; Charles Darwin arrived in the Galapagos in the 1830s and his research here inspired his writings on the theory of evolution by natural selection. Visitors can also check out the lava tunnels on Santa Cruz which help provide some insight into how these volcanic islands were originally formed. Want to stay on dry land before or after a cruise? Stay at the eco-luxury tented Galapagos Safari Camp in the highlands of Santa Cruz.
The real attraction of the Galapagos Islands is of course the wildlife and, due to the fact that the animals here have never experienced man as a predator, visitors can get amazingly close to the many wonderful species found here, both birdlife and mammals on sea and land.
