La Candelaria, Bogota, Colombia.
Large picture windows and balconies give a great view of the rooftops and distant mountains of Bogota’s Candelaria district. Individually decorated, the 29 rooms are painted in the same warm, vibrant colours as the colonial houses that surround the hotel.
The two restaurants at Hotel de la Opera, one on the rooftop, offer a variety of dining options, from Colombian specialties to international dishes. The art deco, 1930s style Thermae spa features a Jacuzzi, Turkish bath and a gym in a magnificent stone and wood space.
The heart of Bogota is small enough to explore on foot, with several museums worth visiting, including the spectacular Gold Museum and the smaller but very interesting Police Museum. For restaurants and bars, head to the Zona Rosa, where Colombia’s beautiful people congregate.
Every Sunday the centre of the city goes blissfully car free and locals take to bikes in a tradition known as La Ciclovia. Hop on two wheels and join in!
