Lake Nicaragua and Granada Thumb

Lake Nicaragua and Granada

With an area the size of England, fresh water Lake Nicaragua is Central America’s largest lake. Peppering the vast waters are hundreds of lava-formed islands, one of which is home to beautiful Jicaro Island Ecolodge. As well as having breathtaking views of Mombacho Volcano, this private island retreat offers a pampering oasis in an otherwise untamed environment. Kayak amongst monkey mangroves, trek the volcano, and make the short journey to Grenada where you’ll explore the cobbled streets and colourful colonial architecture of the New World’s one time trade hub.

Ometepe Island Thumb

Ometepe Island

Formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua, Ometepe Island is a nature-lover’s paradise. Rainforest mountain slopes lead right down to the beautiful beaches and are home to white-faced Capuchin monkeys and the Jesus Christ lizard. The real treat though is the collection of birdlife, with a boast of vibrant toucans, majestic falcons, and minute hummingbirds, as well as migratory flocks of geese on route to North America. You’ll also discover pre-Colombian petroglyphs carved into huge boulders, and distinctive religious beliefs which blend Christianity with native tradition.

San Juan del Sur Thumb

San Juan del Sur

Lolling in a crescent shaped bay on the Pacific Coast, San Juan del Sur gives you a real but charming glimpse at Nicaraguan life. Colourful buildings dot the waterfront with people sitting in rocking chairs on their verandas, children play football along the shore, and some of Central America’s best beaches are within easy reach. It’s also interesting historically as the San Juan River that joins the lake to the coast was once used by Spanish Conquistadors to transport Inca gold to the Caribbean.

Corn Islands Thumb

Corn Islands

Some 70 kilometres off the coast of Nicaragua in the Caribbean Sea, the Corn Islands offer fantastic snorkelling and surfing, and some of the best value diving in the world. Once a haven for pirates and buccaneers, the beautiful beaches are still pristine and with fantastic surf, whilst the fishing villages have a laid back Caribbean vibe. Sip a beer in a hammock and join the locals for the Crab Soup Festival: commemorating the abolition of slavery in 1841, the descendents of slaves celebrate on the 27th of August each year with beach parties, colourful floats, and a beauty pageant.
