While you’re here, swim with turtles in Akumal, visit the famous Mayan ruins of Tulum and explore Rio Secreto, a fascinating labyrinth of underground passageways. Active visitors can give all manner of water sports a go, or head to Isla Mujeres for fantastic diving and snorkelling, where even whale sharks can be spotted.

The Yucatan Peninsula is home to Mexico’s most famous landmark, Chichen Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. A great base from which to visit Chichen Itza is the city of Merida, from where we would also strongly recommend visiting the simply spectacular Lol-Tun caves. Ancient Mayan paintings can still be seen on the walls of the remarkable underground lair, decorated with spectacular incredible stalactites and stalagmites. With electric blue waters and spectacular rock formations, the region’s many cenotes, or ‘sinkholes’, make for a truly unusual and memorable swim.

Oaxaca

The charming colonial city of Oaxaca is dotted with picturesque cathedrals, multi-coloured houses and buzzing markets. The city is surrounded by a number of archaeological curiosities, including the fascinating ancient Zapotec site of Mitla, and be sure to visit the nearby traditional villages, where the culture, politics and even time zone are something different to Oaxaca. Rarely visited, but absolutely worth the trip, is Hierve el Agua, a striking set of natural white rock formations that resemble tumbling waterfalls. In the nearby fresh water springs, sit back and relax while gazing over the forested valley.

With vast deserts, dormant volcanoes and picturesque bays, many of Mexico’s most dramatic landscapes and seascapes can be found in Baja California. Hike the scenic tails into real cowboy territory, complete with cacti and sparsely populated desert, or head to the coast to try surfing, sailing or kayaking.  Nature-lovers should grab a snorkel and discover the amazing diversity of marine life in the Sea of Cortez, or even go dolphin or whale watching - Blue Whales, Humpbacks, Orcas and Sperm Whales all call this region home. Various archaeological sites can be toured in the rugged mountains, where cave paintings can also be seen.

The city of Puebla is set amongst volcanoes and snow-capped mountains. Its fantastic Zocalo shows off elegant colonial architecture and has been given UNESCO World Heritage status; its forts stand proud in the centre and its cathedral has two of the tallest church towers in Mexico. Explore the nearby National Park, La Malintzi, or head to the town of Chipilo, just 15 minutes from Puebla. Settled by Italian immigrants in the late 1800s, the Italian influence remains, with Venetian-style architecture and Italian restaurants and cafes lining the streets. Many locals still even speak the 19th century Venetian dialect.

The enormous Copper Canyon, in the state of Chihuahua, is a magnificent spectacle stretching for an incredible 900 miles. Deceivingly named, it is not just one canyon but six, and boats portions deeper than the Grand Canyon. Unwind in the traditional villages dotted around the area, visit the staggering waterfalls, the largest of which is the highest in Mexico, or relax in the tranquil hot springs, best reached by foot or on horseback. As well as wolves and cougars, the area is home to the fascinating Tarahumara people, who share ancestry with the Aztecs and whose way of life has barely changed in thousands of years. A world away from Mexico City and the party town of Cancun, this is the place to come to get away from it all.
