Gorilla trek Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Thumb

Gorilla Trekking, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

This beautiful ancient forest is home to some 300 mountain gorillas (approximately half the world’s population) living alongside around 350 chimpanzees. Lead by armed guides, you’ll push your way past jungle creepers and undergrowth – rare birds, butterflies and bats flapping in the trees above you – before stopping in your tracks as you come face to face with your primate cousins. Crouch just metres away from these incredible animals as they preen themselves, grumble away to each other, and – if you’re lucky – shoot you a knowing glance. For a taster of this truly unforgettable wildlife encounter, see our Mountains, Lakes and Gorillas itinerary.

Kidepo Valley National Park Thumb

Kidepo Valley National Park

Drama and panoramic views dominate Uganda’s stunning northernmost park. Craggy mountains loom in the distance, birds of prey soar above, and formidable inselbergs erupt from the ground. Equally impressive is Kidepo Valley’s predator population, including lion and wild dogs which skulk amongst huge herds of elephant, zebra, and giraffe. Once you’ve admired the landscape from the park’s highest point, you might like to take a walk along the parched Kidepo River, which for most of the year is just an undulating swathe of sand.

Kibale Forest Thumb

Kibale Forest

Yes, there’s stunning birdlife, forest elephants and colobus monkeys, but for us, Kibale Forest is chimp central. Kibale is one of the best places for chimpanzee trekking in Africa, where the thrill of hearing a far-off whoop is beaten only when you come face to face with man’s closest relative. As well as chimpanzees, Kibale has the greatest concentration of primates in East Africa, so you may also see L’Hoest monkeys, red colobus, and olive baboon.

Lake Mburo Thumb

Lake Mburo

A wildlife-teeming broth of swamps and open water, Lake Mburo is the largest of five lakes in Uganda. Thanks to the mixture of habitat at the water’s edge, you’ll encounter an endless stream of wildlife, including Africa’s largest antelope, the eland, buffalo, warthog, and hippo. Birders in particular will be pricking up their ears at the mention of this lake, with marabou storks and bee-eaters just some of the species you’re likely to see.

Queen Elizabeth National Park Thumb

Queen Elizabeth National Park

For guests who want a traditional safari in Uganda, Queen Elizabeth National Park is the place to go. Having mountain-trekked through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the park’s sweeping savannah offers more leisurely ways to explore. Think game drives and walking safaris amongst herds of buffalo and elephant, lions peering down from the trees above, and chimpanzees whooping deep in the forest. Another wonderful experience in Queen Elizabeth National park is boating through the crater lakes and papyrus swamps which are filled with posturing pelicans, and semi-aquatic antelope.

Semliki Wildlife Reserve Thumb

Semliki Wildlife Reserve

Cradling Uganda’s oldest and practically un-touched forest, beautiful Semliki Wildlife Reserve is the place to experience real wilderness. As you crunch your way through the woodland that creeps up the Rift Valley wall, there are flying squirrels, pygmy antelope, and bats: all ready to give you a jump. Other inhabitants include olive baboon, colobus monkeys and retiring communities of chimps. Meanwhile on Lake Albert and the crocodile-laced Semliki River, birders will be bowled over by the variety of fowl including the bizarre shoebill stork.

Murchison Falls Thumb

Murchison Falls

With the whole of the Nile funnelling through a 6 metre gap in the Rift Valley escarpment before transforming into a thunderous froth, Murchison Falls is one of the most exciting sights in East Africa. Combine this with boat-trips alongside crocodile, hippo, and the extraordinary shoebill stork, and you’ve got yourself some serious exhilaration. As for other wildlife, it is thankfully on the up after widespread poaching in the 80s. Particularly gratifying is witnessing the explosion in the lion and giraffe populations.
