Babylonstoren

The Winelands | South Africa

Babylonstoren is the South African Winelands delight. If Daylesford were to open a South African branch, we’d be surprised if it wasn’t like this. Beautiful gardens, a fabulous farm shop, and charming rooms in the old barns. Opened in 2010, this is as peaceful and serene as some of the oldest Winelands properties. A classic in the making.

Rooms at Babylonstoren

The rooms are in converted barns, looking out over the gardens or towards the farm’s vineyards.  Rustic wooden floors and beams blend seamlessly with chic modern furniture. Floor to ceiling windows and gleaming white décor make the cottages feel incredibly light and airy, and each has its own little bit of outside space.

Food and facilities

Much of your grub comes straight from the gardens. Fresh seasonal vegetables, and herbs cut just a few hours ago.  The restaurant currently only serves breakfast and lunch, but with the whole of the Winelands on your doorstep, you won’t be short of options for dinner. There’s a pool (stylishly converted from the old farm reservoir), a gym in case all of that delicious food gets on top of you, and a spa for that well-earned massage.

Activities at Babylonstoren

Even if you’re not a gardener, be sure to take a wander, these are truly charming. There’s a lake with fishing and canoeing, bicycles to explore the estate with, and the farm to discover. And if you’re curious, don’t be afraid to ask- previous guests have got involved with everything from picking their own veggies for dinner to helping with the plum harvest. Beyond this lie the culinary delicacies and vineyards of the Winelands- you have been warned, make sure you travel in a belt with some extra notches!

In the know

If you’re travelling with someone with a sense of humour, take a wander outside the restaurant where the maze is growing up. The “wobbly” cobbles are pressure pads for the trick fountains hidden amongst the plants.
