Luxury South Africa Holidays and Safaris

For a luxury holiday, exhilarating family safari or a truly incredible honeymoon, South Africa's got the lot: captivating cities, inspiring landscapes, stunning wildlife seen from divine luxury lodges, and a decent glass of wine or two, so we're told.

South Africa is the kind of place you'll need to visit more than once, so take your time and saunter along the beautiful Garden Route, sample fine South African wine in The Winelands, don't leave the Kruger until you've ticked off The Big Five and allow Cape Town several days to work its magic – you won't be disappointed.

South Africa is also THE place for a fantastic non-malarial safari, so is perfect for families with younger children. Two of our favourites are Kwandwe on the Eastern Cape and Kwandwe in Madikwe National Park, where the the camps are totally geared up for looking after families.

Regions

Cape Town Thumb

Cape Town

With formidable Table Mountain as its backdrop, and show-stopping views to the Atlantic, it’s no wonder Cape Town garners so much attention. But aside from basking in the most stunning of locations, Cape Town is wonderfully cosmopolitan and provides a stylish punctuation mark in an African itinerary. For bracing sea air, and some of the best restaurants in the world, your first port of call is of course the harbour, but for authentic city buzz, you’re best to head to the city bowl. As for hotels, Cape Grace has a superb waterfront location, whilst the cool More Quarters is the cool Cape Town pad you’ve always dreamed of.

Greater Kruger and Sabi Sands Thumb

Greater Kruger and Sabi Sands

World famous for superlative wildlife viewing, the Kruger’s iconic reputation is wholly justified. A cast of thousands of game await you in this strip of land that hugs the border with Mozambique, and acacia-dotted stretches of Savannah are just waiting for you to photograph. In its entirety, the park is of course widely visited – but that doesn’t mean you can’t have an intimate and unspoilt safari. For just that, the private game reserve of Sabi Sands is the place to go, and if you fancy sleeping in a tree house as lions roar below, you’re sure to fall in love with magical Lion Sands.

The Winelands Thumb

The Winelands

Having sampled a glass of South Africa’s finest in Cape Town it would be madness not to visit the nearby Winelands. A glamorous way to get there is by helicopter, but it’s also an exhilarating experience to drive over the four mountain passes. When you arrive on the historic wine estates, you can cogitate over every imaginable grape variety, surrounded by marvellous scenery. Also worth visiting is the picturesque Victorian village of Franschhoek, with its period whitewashed houses and excellent restaurants. For a sample of this delectable region, see our Wine, Battlefields, and Wildlife itinerary.

The Battlefields Thumb

The Battlefields

Anyone who has seen the classic film ‘Zulu’ can immediately envisage the dramatic landscapes where the battlefields lie. The most famous of the Anglo-Zulu battles were at Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift - brought to life by the talented and knowledgeable guides, as birds of prey swoop above. Afterwards it’s a humbling experience to see the graves of soldiers, killed in these bloodthirsty 19th century clashes. For an insight into all of this, along with relaxing activities like cycling and riding, we highly recommend Fugitives Drift.

Whale Coast Thumb

Whale Coast

Between July and November, South Africa has some world-class whale watching, so head to Hermanus to get up close to the friendly southern right whales. How to be sure you’re going to see one? A whale crier wanders around the town centre and blows a horn every time a whale arrives in the bay! What’s more, you don’t even have to get on a boat to see them as the best views are directly above on the craggy cliffs. For more marine adventures you can cage-dive with great white sharks, and for a relaxing day-trip there are pretty seaside villages and wineries.

The Garden Route Thumb

Garden Route

There’s a temptation to rush along this beautiful coastal plain between Mossel Bay and Storms River mouth, but we recommend taking your time to explore its mountains, forests and secluded coves. Ideal for a scenic self-drive, and with plenty of family-friendly activities, you can potter around the pretty coastal towns like Plettenberg Bay (very New England in feel), play golf on one of many good golf courses, and if you’re lucky spot whales and dolphins from the craggy headland. For a typically warm introduction to the Garden Route, we recommend Lairds Lodge.

Eastern Cape Thumb

Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape is a great place to spend a night or two at the end of the Garden Route, with family friendly and malaria-free safaris. An absolute gem here is Kwandwe, where you can tick off the Big Five, identify various dung specimens, and (though perhaps not in this order!) allow the friendly hosts to feed you up on delicious grub. One more treat for families is the Addo Elephant Park.

Western Cape Thumb

Western Cape

Jagged coastline meets crashing waves on the wonderfully wild Western Cape. It may not be the place for sunbathing, but it’s heaven for walking in the ocean-spray, dramatic sea views, and coastal paths strewn with wild flowers. Whilst you’re staying in one of the fishermen-style cottages, it’s well worth going on a shipwreck tour, and paying a visit to the Cape Agulhas lighthouse which marks Africa’s most southerly point. Inland is the savage beauty of Bushman’s Kloof, and ancient San rock paintings of the Cederberg Mountains.

The Waterberg Thumb

The Waterberg

Like Kwazulu Natal, The Waterberg is one of South Africa’s all-rounders. Just North of Johannesburg and extending all the way to the Botswanan border, you can enjoy a malaria free safari filled with game, along with spectacular mountain views and a landscape awash with history. A particularly exhilarating way to experience The Waterberg is on a riding safari; just imagine peering down from the mountain ridges on horseback, hacking through the bushveld amongst the sights and sounds of the pristine wilderness, or perhaps racing a herd of giraffe over the savannah. Ants Hill and Ants Nest offer all this, and perfectly complement the big-game destinations in Madikwe and the Kruger.

KwaZulu-Natal Thumb

Kwazulu Natal

From the Drakensberg Mountains, to the beautiful Indian Ocean coastline, KwaZulu Natal is a vast and varied patchwork where you can experience the best of South Africa’s culture, scenery, and wildlife. Trekking through sand forest and scrub on a wilderness safari, you’ll have the chance to spot the Big Five, including the rare black rhino. Birders meanwhile will be in heaven at Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, where you can wander amongst huge sand dunes and papyrus swamps. Last but not least, it is fascinating to encounter living-breathing Zulu culture, and observe the communities’ practices and traditions.

Madikwe Game Reserve thumb

Madikwe Game Reserve

A staggering translocation programme has transformed this vast reserve on the Botswanan border into a haven for wildlife. For a malaria free safari, the sweeping savannah and rocky escarpment of Madikwe are home to The Big Five, as well as hyena, giraffe, cheetah, and the rare wild dog. As well as preserving the now abundant wildlife, the regeneration programme benefits the local community who are heavily involved with its implementation. For a safari that feels like stepping back in time, and a lodge that is truly ‘Out of Africa,’ check out Madikwe Hills with its wonderful baths in the bush!

The Kalahari Thumb

The Kalahari

Vast swathes of nothingness greet Kalahari-adventurers and those in search of total wilderness. The rest of the arid landscape is made up of undulating red sand-dunes, endless salt pans, and desolate scrub, which surprisingly is home to lion, ostrich, and fascinating families of meerkats. For an exclusive oasis in this captivating landscape, Tswalu leads the way.
