Luxury Mozambique Holidays

Mozambique: Africa's hot tip for a luxury beach holiday.

Mozambique's pristine, tropical beaches span over 2000km of coastline, lapped by warm turquoise Indian Ocean waters. The snorkelling and diving here are some of the best in the world and as a luxury holiday destination relatively new to the scene, its fabulous lodges take a progressive approach to sustainable tourism.

Maldives beware, Mozambique has arrived.

Lake Niassa (Lake Malawi) Thumb

Lake Niassa (Lake Malawi)

Lake Malawi’s south-eastern shores are in Mozambique and here it is known as Lake Niassa. With beautiful sandy beaches, and crystalline waters, the wonderfully sleepy pace is set by drifting fishermen, and the occasional herd of cows lolloping along the shoreline. Snorkel and canoe amongst shimmering shoals of fish, go hiking in the surrounding forests, and for bird watching and wonderful views over the bay take a safari through the Manda Wilderness Reserve. To see exactly what we’re talking about, have a look at dreamy Nkwichi Lodge which has a gorgeous stargazing bed, and al fresco baths hewn out of rock.

Mozambique Safaris

A Mozambique safari can’t compete with the big game experiences you find elsewhere in Eastern and Southern Africa, but is great if you want a wilderness hit on an otherwise beach-based itinerary. In the Gorongosa and Niassa reserves you have old-school safari and can become part of a constantly evolving conservation story. Spotting African wild dog is a particular highlight on a Mozambique safari, and although large game like elephant and lion may take a while to track, when you do spot them it’s even more exhilarating. For safari buffs who want true wilderness, and to tread where few others have ventured, a Mozambique safari won’t disappoint.

Bazaruto and the South Coast Thumb

Bazaruto and the South Coast

Jaw-droppingly beautiful, the islands of Bazaruto and Benguerra are the perfect choice for a luxury beach holiday or honeymoon. The ingredients? Towering silver sand dunes, azure waters, and starry skies to make you go all dreamy-eyed, not to mention world class diving and snorkelling. Manta ray and reef shark sightings are common in these turquoise waters, and you may also be lucky enough to spot the rare dugong. To get to the islands you’ll set off from the small city of Maputo – a vibrant jungle of makeshift markets and Portuguese Colonial architecture.

Quirimbas, Pemba and the North Coast Thumb

Quirimbas, Pemba and the North Coast

The most glamorous additions to the tourist scene in Mozambique are the islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago. These are accessed from Pemba on the mainland, but whilst you’re there the unspoilt North Coast beaches are definitely worth a visit (check out Londo Lodge and you’ll soon see what we mean!) Yet more pristine beaches greet you on the 27 remote and unspoilt islands of the Quirimbas along with historic fortified towns, and wonderfully friendly locals; to find out more take a peek at our Coral Reefs and Culture: Mozambique Island Hopping itinerary.
