Luxury Holidays and Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

The tiny East African country of Rwanda, offers one of the most extraordinarily moving wildlife experiences on earth: the chance to track Mountain Gorillas. The misty mountains of Volcanoes National Park are home to these incredibly rare creatures, and no one who sees them in the wild will be disappointed. Astonishingly human in their actions and size, Mountain Gorillas have an undeniable lure; gazing into their liquid eyes is like gazing into another soul.

A Gorilla Trekking Holiday in Rwanda combines well with spotting chimpanzees in Rwanda's beautiful Nyungwe Forest and some R&R on the shores of Lake Kivu. Rwanda can also be twinned easily with a safari in Kenya or the beaches of Zanzibar.

Volcanoes National Park Thumbs

Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda’s irresistible lure is of course the opportunity to track the Mountain Gorillas. The misty mountains of Volcanoes National Park are home to these remarkable creatures, and – as you crouch just meters away, watching them playing and feeding in their natural habitat – you’ll experience a wildlife encounter like no other on earth. Gorillas aside, those with a day or so to spare will find the forest has so much more to offer, with wonderful hiking and beautiful birdlife. After all that exploring, spend a few nights with your feet up at lovely Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.

Lake Kivu Thumb

Lake Kivu

If you want to make the most of Rwanda, aside from the gorillas, a visit to Lake Kivu is sure to make up part of your trip. Leading down to the lake, there are ramshackle villages perched on terraced hillsides, and on the water’s edge there are sandy beaches and traditional dugout canoes for the daily fishing expeditions. All in all, Lake Kivu is the ideal place to put your feet up for a few days, and makes a welcome interlude after an arduous gorilla trek.

Nyungwe Forest Thumb

Nyungwe Forest

Beautiful and labyrinthine, Nyungwe Forest is a paradise for walkers and birders. Orchids, giant ferns, and towering mahogany tangle together; waterfalls tumble amongst the trees, whilst tiny butterflies and jewel-coloured birds flutter all around you. Colobus monkeys are the exhibitionists of the forest, performing acrobatics amongst the twisted vines, but perhaps the most thrilling experience is hearing the haunting whoop of distant chimpanzees. Hiking along the steep trails of Nyungwe makes a fantastic warm-up for a gorilla trek, and bedding down at Nyungwe Forest Lodge is the ideal end to an adventurous day.

Kigali Thumb

Kigali

No visit to Rwanda is complete without at least a part of day spent in Kigali. Passing through a busy capital city is essential for every visitor to Africa, to see what lies beyond the remote villages and wild game reserves. This hilly, bustling, colourful capital is at the hub of Rwanda, and even a short stop here shows there’s much more to modern Africa than big cats and beaches. Particularly worth visiting (in fact, we recommend that no-one leave Rwanda without seeing it) is the genocide museum: a moving and thoughtful insight into the country’s past.
