If you want to make the most of Rwanda, aside from the gorillas, a visit to Lake Kivu is sure to make up part of your trip. Leading down to the lake, there are ramshackle villages perched on terraced hillsides, and on the water’s edge there are sandy beaches and traditional dugout canoes for the daily fishing expeditions. All in all, Lake Kivu is the ideal place to put your feet up for a few days, and makes a welcome interlude after an arduous gorilla trek.

Beautiful and labyrinthine, Nyungwe Forest is a paradise for walkers and birders. Orchids, giant ferns, and towering mahogany tangle together; waterfalls tumble amongst the trees, whilst tiny butterflies and jewel-coloured birds flutter all around you. Colobus monkeys are the exhibitionists of the forest, performing acrobatics amongst the twisted vines, but perhaps the most thrilling experience is hearing the haunting whoop of distant chimpanzees. Hiking along the steep trails of Nyungwe makes a fantastic warm-up for a gorilla trek, and bedding down at Nyungwe Forest Lodge is the ideal end to an adventurous day.

Passing through a busy capital city is essential for every visitor to Africa, to see what lies beyond the remote villages and wild game reserves. This hilly, bustling, colourful capital is at the hub of Rwanda, and even a short stop here shows there’s much more to modern Africa than big cats and beaches. Particularly worth visiting (in fact, we recommend that no-one leave Rwanda without seeing it) is the genocide museum: a moving and thoughtful insight into the country’s past.
