Those who want to see as much game as possible, particularly first-time safari goers.
In the Musiara area of the Masai Mara, an area so abundant in game that the colonial governors of Kenya came to take their safaris here, and the Big Cat film crew are often stationed nearby.
Governors' Camp is a relatively large camp with 37 luxury safari tents (including four family tents) on the banks of the Mara River. Most of the tents are stretched amongst the trees along the river, while a few look out over the plains. All are ensuite (these are luxury tents after all) and have a small verandah in front.
Authenticity is the name of the game here, so light is by flickering paraffin lanterns, and meals are eaten outdoors as often as possible. There’s a dining tent for the cooler evenings, a bar, a small shop, and, most importantly, a crackling campfire that’s lit each night.
If you can’t get enough time in the bush, Governors’ Camp is ideal, as a stay here includes three, rather than the usual two game drives each day. With this many animals around, you’ll certainly won’t be short of wildlife to watch! For something different, Governors’ can also arrange dawn hot-air balloon flights over the Mara, and walking safaris.
If you want to travel during September, book well in advance (a year is not too early): Governors’ has a prime location for spotting the wildebeest migration and fills up quickly.
