Ricky Coates

Asia Travel Expert

Ricky has been working in the travel industry for over 20 years, including with several leading luxury tour operators, and has travelled all over the world, ever since his wanderlust was first fuelled by a degree in travel and a globe-wide backpacking trip.

While he has ticked off an impressive number of countries, he has developed a particular love for Asia, thanks to its diversity; you can make the most of so many different experiences in close proximity, effortlessly taking in captivating cities, colourful culture, exotic wildlife and beautiful beaches, all in one memorable holiday.

Among Ricky's many highlights are meeting elephants in Thailand and coming face to face with orangutans in Borneo, white water rafting in Bali , discovering delicious local cuisine in Hoi An in Vietnam and cruising along the serene Irrawaddy River in Burma.

From making the most of Thailand's many charms to discovering Burma before everyone else does, Ricky will draw on all his experience and expertise to create a perfect holiday for you.

My Top Tips

Meet elephants in memorable style

As well as a luxurious stay in a stunning setting in the heart of lush, tropical rainforest, Elephant Hills Tented Camp in Thailand’s Khao Sok National Park offers a truly memorable experience - meeting and interacting with elephants in their natural habitat.

Go on the ultimate Indonesia honeymoon

This fantastic holiday in Indonesia combines idyllic get-away-from-it-all bliss at Nihi Sumba and a cruise taking in the wildlife and nature of the islands, as well as the irresistible hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. This trip is perfect for a special honeymoon or anniversary.

Celebrate your 50th birthday by exploring Asia by train

What better way to celebrate your 50th birthday than travelling around Asia by train? Hop aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express for a holiday with a difference. For this and many more memorable ways to celebrate, get inspiration here.

Take a cooking class in Burma

Burma is simply magical, with warm, friendly people, beautiful landscapes and fantastic food. One of my most memorable experiences is taking a cooking class by Inle Lake, where crops are grown on floating fields and fishermen fish using centuries-old techniques.
