Formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua, Ometepe Island is a nature-lover’s paradise. Rainforest mountain slopes lead right down to the beautiful beaches and are home to white-faced Capuchin monkeys and the Jesus Christ lizard.
The real treat though is the collection of birdlife, with a boast of vibrant toucans, majestic falcons, and minute hummingbirds, as well as migratory flocks of geese on route to North America. You’ll also discover pre-Colombian petroglyphs carved into huge boulders, and distinctive religious beliefs which blend Christianity with native tradition.
