Athens & Crete Family Holiday

The Best Family Holiday In Greece

Athens & Southern Mainland Greece, Crete & Corfu

Duration: 7 nights

Price: From $1,200 per person in low season based on two adults and two children under 12 travelling together and including accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis, all internal flights, private transfers, car hire and taxes

This family vacation in Greece combines city and beach: discover the fascinating history and colourful culture of Athens before spending a blissful few sun-kissed days on the idyllic island of Crete, enjoying everything it has to offer. Make the most of the impossibly pretty beaches and azure waters, and enjoy relaxing by the sea and swimming under the Mediterranean sun, before lingering over delicious food in traditional tavernas. Children will also love having a Robinson Crusoe-style adventure by taking a cruise around the bay in a traditional caique and finding their very own hidden cove to explore.
Perfect forFamilies looking for a perfect luxury beach holiday with a bit of city culture thrown in.
In the knowAround Crete, we also love Vai, a beautiful palm tree-lined beach, and Samaria Gorge, with its natural pools to swim in and a shaded trail to walk through, and a beach to reward you at the end, is one of our top highlights here: but while it’s a pleasant downhill trail, it is 16km-long and uneven in parts, so we recommend this one if you have older children/teenagers.

Fly to Athens and check into the Grande Bretagne, a luxurious hotel in the heart of the city – perfect for stress-free sightseeing. There’s plenty for families here: as well as its historic gems such as the Acropolis and the Parthenon, a fascinating natural history museum, a planetarium and a zoo full of animals such as snow leopards and monkeys, you could take the cable car up Mount Lycabettus for panoramic views over the city or visit Allou Fun Park, one of the most popular theme parks in Greece, which has rides to suit all ages and scare factors - and you can enjoy more city views from the top of the ferris wheel. On your return to the hotel, children (and parents!) will love cooling off in the rooftop pool.

Crete, Greece’s largest island, is an intriguing mix, from the traditional white houses, pretty villages and beautiful beaches to its variety of cultural influences, including Venetian fortresses and Byzantine monasteries. Inland, the rugged mountains and lush green valleys guarantee incredible landscapes and perfect seclusion, while the beaches, coves and harbours are an ideal natural playground for children.

After a flight to Heraklion, you’ll pick up your car and enjoy a scenic drive along the coast to the Blue Palace, one of our favourite family-friendly hotels in Greece, which has plenty of space for all the family - including your very own private heated pool. The hotel’s private beach is also perfect for sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling, and there’s a kids club with activities from painting to Greek dancing which will ensure your children won’t be bored.

Having a car at your disposal is ideal for exploring the island, or there are plenty of other options too: why not hire a bike and head into Elounda for lunch? Feast on local delicious produce including breads, cheeses and olives (Cretan cuisine is said to increase your lifespan - whether that’s true or not, it’s certainly delicious!).

Meanwhile, if your children are inspired by the historic architecture on show in Athens, visit the Minoan ruins of Knossos, where you can see complex buildings with mosaics and wall paintings. Or hop on a boat to visit the fascinating archaeological sites on the island of Spinalonga, visible across the shore, and return to the Blue Palace in time for a swim and dinner on the terrace.
