Right on the waterfront, facing out onto the dock of Sullivan’s Cove.

Rooms at The Henry Jones Art Hotel

Brimming with character, many of the 56 rooms at The Henry Jones retain the building’s original stone walls and exposed wooden-beam ceilings, and have views of the working wharf outside or Mount Wellington, which stands behind the hotel. Silk furnishings and the Japanese-inspired Oriental Suites give a nod to the harbour and former factory’s trading and colonial history, combined with uber-modern touches like all-glass bathrooms and double spa baths. To really immerse in a living piece of history, stay in the Peacock Terrace, which houses Tasmania’s oldest spiral staircase and was the former residence of Sir Henry Jones himself.

Food and facilities

Locally-sourced produce is put to excellent use in the hotel’s main restaurant, Henry’s, where classic dishes get a modern makeover. If you’re after something light, the IXL Long Bar serves a range of smaller plates, but the main focus is their impressive selection of cocktails, live music and views of the waterfront, making it a superb spot to spend your evening.

Activities at The Henry Jones Art Hotel

With a museum-worthy collection of art on display in the hotel itself, it’s well worth taking a guided tour around the building for an insight into its history; and adjacent to the hotel stands the Henry Jones Design Gallery, further showcasing local Tasmanian design and sculpture. Just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel is Salamanca Place, where each Saturday a bustling market sells gourmet produce, dishes up street food and offers an array of art and crafts as unique souvenirs and is one of Tasmania’s top attractions.
