|Here at Exsus Travel our office conversations tend to revolve around three things; travel, food and wine. Which means that foodie focused holidays are just about our favourite thing to plan – as long as you don’t call just before lunchtime. Jokes aside, we have tried and tasted many of the best cooking classes, wineries and immersive foodie experiences on our travels, and can wax lyrical about which made our taste buds tingle. So whether you want to learn to cook with an Italian nonna (Grandma), bottle your own wine, or enjoy a private dinner in a 400-year-old fortress, we can make it happen…|
Peru, Chile & Argentina
Combine three of South America’s most exciting destinations in one flavour-packed trip. Start with Peruvian ceviche in lively Lima, then head to Chile’s Millahue Valley and the stunning Vik Chile for some world-class wine tasting. To top off the trip enjoy more wine in Argentina’s Mendoza, and learn the art of authentic asado (Argentinian barbecuing) in Buenos Aires.
Basque Country, Spain
From paella to pintxo, Spain is world-renowned for its mouth-watering cuisine and nowhere is upholding this reputation taken more seriously than in the beautiful Basque Country. Eat and drink your way around the region on a leisurely road trip that will take in Madrid, Ribera del Duero, Elciego (also known as the City of Wine) and San Sebastian.
Flavourful, exotic and made with love, Moroccan cuisine is amongst our all-time favourites. On a week-long holiday, indulge in fresh seafood and Mediterranean fare in Casablanca, before travelling to take in the intoxicating aromas in Fes’ medieval medina. After a cooking class or two we're willing to bet you'll be purchasing your very own tagine dish to take home too.
While the rest of the world starts to embrace organic and sustainable eating, South Africa has long been a pioneer in the farm-to-fork movement. With an abundance of local meat, freshly caught seafood and home-grown veggies to choose from, there truly is something to please every palate - and that’s without even mentioning the wine.
Japanese food is having a real moment in the UK and our office takeaway orders are dominated by sushi and okonomiyaki of late. That said, as our Asia experts like to remind us, there’s nothing like the real deal. Taste your way around this culture-rich country on an action-packed foodie holiday and you’ll soon feel the same.
For those who have been there and done that when it comes to foodie experiences, a few days in Bulgaria’s fertile Pirin Mountains might be just the ticket. Stay at the Relais & Chateaux accredited Zornitza Family Estate and you’ll be treated to peaceful, picturesque scenery and delicious food and wine - all harvested from the estate’s own farm.
India is known the world across for its spicy curries and richly flavoured accompaniments. Stay at Shahpura Bagh and you can enjoy a romantic and totally private candle-lit dinner in their beautiful 400-year-old fortress, complete with a menu made up of recipes passed down through the generations of royals who once lived here.
Italians would argue they reign supreme when it comes to food and wine, and we’d find it hard to disagree. Nowhere is the Italian love for food more prominent than in Tuscany, where organic farms and beautiful boutique hotels offer authentic home-cooking lessons and pasta aplenty. Add eminently sippable wine to the equation and you really can’t go wrong.
If you’ve got a penchant for port or love for fresh seafood, consider Portugal for your next foodie holiday. We will pack your trip full of expert cooking classes, pastéis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) and even a journey on the vintage Presidential Train, which transports passengers (in serious style) between Porto and the Douro Valley.
Wine lovers of the world unite in their love of Napa Valley, and we can vouch that it really is that good, with plenty of luxury boutique hotels to boot. However, we’d also like to shine a light on the lesser-known Sonoma and Mendocino counties, whose old-school wineries are the perfect complement to Napa’s glamour.
