THE HIGHLANDS - 7 nights

Having explored Otavalo’s indigenous market, you’ll meet the horses at your first hacienda and embark on your equestrian adventure the following morning, beginning at the Imbabura Volcano and arriving in the High Andes several days later, passing through the snows of Cayambe, the Cotopaxi National Park and the equator line and along the way. The epic ride takes in some Ecuador’s most magical natural wonders, venturing through gorges, plains and eucalyptus forests, climbing rocky ridges and  passing Andean peaks, lagoons and  snow-capped volcanoes, including  Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. Much of the land is shrouded in ancient history and legend, and you’ll be taken on a journey back in time as you reach Incan forts and earth pyramids erected by the pre-Inca population. You’ll also get a real insight into the way of life of Ecuador’s rural communities, stopping at lovely little villages and local farms that use traditional methods of cultivation. As you ride, keep an eye out for the airborne wildlife that calls the region home, including the mighty condor and the tiny hummingbird. Each night you’ll stay in a different hacienda, and the variety is amazing; from a hacienda built way back in 1602 to another famously packed full of red roses, and one hidden between four volcanoes to others visited  by the likes of  Alexander von Humboldt and Simón Bolívar. The haciendas enjoy the most spectacular and peaceful of settings, surrounded by Ecuador at its most rugged, pristine and untouched. As the ride comes to an end, you’ll be taken back to Quito for one more night in the capital.
