Honeymoons don’t have to be all about flopping on a paradisiacal beach and getting married life off to as relaxed a start as possible. While that’s some people’s idea of heaven, others prefer a dash more adventure – and if you’re looking for a honeymoon with a difference, northwest Argentina offers the perfect blend of wild adventure, natural beauty, and fast-paced city life. This itinerary begins in Buenos Aires, where you’ll tango ‘til dawn in traditional milongas and browse the boutiques and galleries of Palermo Soho, before heading on to the beautiful colonial city – and centre of Argentine folk music – Salta. The next week is spent venturing into the wilds of the northwest, with 4x4 excursions into the otherworldly plains of the puna, stopping off at desolate salt flats, bizarre rock formations, and huge pumice fields. The most spectacular leg of your journey, though, is saved until the end, as you pay a visit to the spectacular Iguazu Falls.
Perfect forHoneymooners looking for an adventurous start to married life.
In the knowWhy not add a few days in the buzzing beachside city of Rio de Janeiro, across the border in Brazil.

BUENOS AIRES

2 nightsBUENOS AIRES

Your honeymoon adventure kicks off in Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina. You’ll spend two nights in a Superior Room at the Mine Hotel, a stylish boutique property in the Palermo Soho barrio – the city’s most bohemian and fashionable district. The area is full of fashion boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants – don’t miss the chance to try the famously juicy steaks at La Cabrera and Don Julio – and is a favourite hangout for creative types of all stripes. Make sure you catch some tango during your stay here in one of the city’s many milongas – the best is Rojo Tango, at the Faena Hotel.

Salta

2 nightsSALTA

Your next stop is Salta, a pretty colonial city and the gateway to Argentina’s wild northwest. The city’s history dates back hundreds of years, and it has the buildings to prove it, from the pink-hued cathedral to the Church of St. Francis. Salta’s also famous for its folk music, which is performed through the night in its pena clubs. You’ll spend two nights at Finca Valentina, a boutique hotel in a restored country house on the outskirts of the city. Lovely owners Fabrizio and Valentina own a travel agency, Socompa, and offer a range of excursions into the beautiful surrounding landscapes, which you will enjoy over the next six days.

El Tolar

2 nightsEL TOLAR

This is where the real adventure begins, as you venture out in a 4x4 to Tolar Grande, a small town on the edge of the Arizaro salt flat. This part of northwest Argentina is known as the puna, and is renowned for its salt flats and strange rock formations. In this area in particular, the landscape is dotted with stromatolites – rare formations, half rock and half bacteria, which form in strange patterns and contain fossil records dating back millions of years. You’ll spend two nights at Hosteria Casa Andina, a simple but comfortable lodge built from local volcanic rock.

El Penon

2 nightsEL PENON

The second of your three 4x4 adventures takes you to El Penon, a small highland village surrounded by the desolate beauty of the puna desert. Local attractions include the aptly named White Dunes and the Piedra Pomez, a huge plain covered in lumps of pumice. Also nearby is the Laguna Grande, where up to 19,000 flamingos gather at one time. The next two nights will be spent at Hosteria El Penon, a boutique guesthouse built in the traditional Andean style from rugged local stone and wood.

Cafayate

2 nightsCAFAYATE

The last of your 4x4 expeditions will take you to Cafayate, a pleasant town in the Calchaqui Valley – a region of beautiful, brightly coloured rock formations. Cafayate is renowned for the quality of its wine, second only to Mendoza in Argentinean terms, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample the region’s produce over the next couple of days. You’ll spend two nights at Vinas de Cafayate, a beautiful wine resort surrounded by rolling vineyards and the Cerro San Isidro hills in the background. A range of tastings are on offer, both here and at other nearby wineries, and you’ll also have the chance to tour local farms and try their goats’ cheese, a regional speciality.

Iguazu

2 nightsIGUAZU

Your honeymoon adventure ends in spectacular fashion, with a visit to the Iguazu Falls. One of the largest waterfall systems on Earth, and truly one of the natural world’s great wonders, the falls cascade for hundreds of feet down a huge step in the Iguazu River. You’ll stay in nearby Puerto Iguazu at the Hotel Panoramic Grand, a historic luxury hotel and something of a local landmark; as the name suggests, the hotel affords stunning views over the falls. The Iguazu National Park which surrounds the falls is an attraction in itself, a dense rainforest home to monkeys, caimans and tapirs, among many other creatures which you can hope to spot on hiking trails through the jungle.
