The legendary Palio di Siena horse races are the highlight of the Siena calendar, and an incredibly awe-inspiring sporting spectacle. Held twice a year on the 2nd July and the 16th August, the atmospheric races involve 10 horses and riders competing to circle the famous Piazza del Campo three times.

With a history that dates back to 1656 the races are a traditionally lively competition between 10 of Siena's seventeen contrada (city wards). Riders and horses will be decked out in the colours of their contrada and this grandeur is all part of the race's exciting draw.

Itinerary details

1 nightTuscany

On arrival into Florence airport you will be collected and driven via private transfer to Castel Monastero. This 11^th-century monastery has been lovingly restored and converted into a luxury retreat in the lush countryside outside of Siena. To ease tired limbs after your journey, you might like to enjoy your included spa treatment and spend the afternoon in the hotel’s sauna and Turkish bath. Alternatively, sun worshippers might prefer to spend the day around the cascading pools.

1 nightPalio di Sienna

The big race day has arrived and today you will be travelling to Siena in good time to get comfortable before the Palio di Siena begins. From the confines of your exclusive window area, with spectacular views overlooking Piazza del Campo, witness the pre-race parade and race itself. During the day, enjoy drinks and a typical Tuscan buffet dinner. Then, once the excitement of the competition is over, you will be transferred back to Castel Monastero for the night.

After an exhilarating day at the race, take it easy with a relaxing day enjoying the best of Italy’s famous food and wine. Spend a morning in the sun at the hotel, and then in the afternoon you might like to enjoy a wine tasting at a nearby winery.

In the evening, indulge at the hotel's elegant Contrada restaurant. While dining on classic Tuscan cuisine crafted by the resident chef and Gordon Ramsay, reflect on the race and a great few days in Italy.
