Adelaide’s growing reputation as a gourmet destination has made it a hot favourite on the Aussie foodie circuit. Home to a trendy restaurant scene in its urban centre and rippling vineyards blanketing its outskirts, this region produces some of the country’s finest food and wines to tantalise every taste bud.
To sample a flavour of Adelaide for yourself, our Australasia expert, Annette, offers you some of her insider knowledge to help you make the most of the gourmet scene.
When I'm in Adelaide, one of my highlights is sampling the vast array of gourmet produce and excellent wines that the region is so well known for.
I’ve come up with a list of my personal favourites where a specialist guide will take you on a voyage of discovery searching out the best of the best...from the finest Coffin Bay oysters, to a great strudel (yes strudel!) to the best local Shiraz. Along the way you’ll hear interesting tales of the region and its history from the locals who really know their onions... and their grapes.
The Central Market Tour
Join chef Mark Gleeson as he takes a small group or private tour around Adelaide’s 140 year old Central Market. It’s the largest fresh produce market in the Southern Hemisphere. Go in the morning for the breakfast tour or stay on and have the Cantonese seafood lunch. Fantastic fun & delicious!
Mary Anne Kennedy knows the whole Adelaide food and wine arena incredibly well, she is always my go to person for a top restaurant tip whenever I’m in Adelaide. She does various wine region tours as well as tours of Adelaide. There’s the ‘Collect, Create and Cook’ tour for anyone wanting to get hands on with the fresh local produce they’ve just bought in the market, plus the ‘Adelaide Hospitality’ tour where you join a local family for dinner or the ‘Taste of the Adelaide Hills’ tour.
Off Piste Tours
Ben Neville’s Fork & Grape Tour takes you out of the city to explore the best of McLaren Vale by 4WD, a highly recommended day out. His Craft Beer Tour is pretty unique too!
Rich and Lingering
Rich and Lingering is a multi-award winning specialist food and wine tour operator with a passion for gratifying the senses. They offer indulgent private food and wine tours around Adelaide and the surrounding wine regions and will put together a day tour to your exact specifications.
Tim Wildman is a Master of Wine with an easy going approach to his subject. He will take you on a bespoke wine tour with a difference, from tasting Australia’s most famous wines in a vintage cellar one minute to sitting around the kitchen table of a young wine maker tasting the new season wine out of barrel the next. You can include tasting a wine from your birth year, blending and naming your own unique wine or having a bush BBQ with local winemakers.
Highly recommended outside of Adelaide are the super luxury seven night KI Food Safari at Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island and Southern Blue Tours Seafood Capital or Oceans and Oysters tours departing from Port Lincoln on the Eyre Peninsula – all easily combined on a self-drive holiday to South Australia.
