Another year has rolled around and 2012 is well and truly upon us. Exciting times. For a dose of New Year travel inspiration, we wanted to share the Exsus destination hotlist: the places we think you need to be jetting off to in 2012.
The pinnacle in safari goer’s safaris, Zambia is definitely our top tip for 2012. If you’ve already meandered through the Mara and snapped pics in the Selous, this is the destination you need to head for. Strap on your boots for unparalleled walking safaris, canoe along the Zambezi or relax in the country’s sublime luxury lodges. New airline routes opening up this year have made it even easier to get to this must visit destination.
Still far less popular with the tourist crowds of neighbouring Thailand, Cambodia is beginning to fill the shoes it was made to walk in. A beguiling mix of ancient culture, buzzing cities and incredible jungle lodges this South East Asian cultural playground will no doubt be topping your wish list for 2012.
Once the preserve of intrepid backpackers Colombia is quickly becoming the rising star of South America. And we love it. Forget the security concerns of old and soak up the jungle-covered hills of the Sierra Nevada, sip on the finest coffee in the plantations of Zona Cafetera, and stay at incredible eco accommodation in Tayrona National Park. Unspoilt and still relatively untouched, get there before everyone else does.
The Galapagos has long been the jewel in the crown of South American wildlife. And it’s not hard to see why. With new boats taking to the waters, giving you a wider range of routes to explore, and some fantastic new eco hotels popping on the mainland we’re tipping this truly remarkable group of islands to be top of the 2012 hot list. The Galapagos is a year round, family destination that is getting better and better by the minute.
Also on the hot list for 2012, though certainly not for its climate: Antarctica. No doubt Mr Attenborough and co have had a lot to do with an added interest in this frozen wonderland, with whales breaching through the glassy water, penguins waddling across frozen plains and blisteringly blue icebergs glistening in the 20 hours of sunlight, this destination at the end of the earth is a once in a lifetime trip waiting to be experienced.
