Mount Etna erupted spectacularly this week, and with a major exhibition on Pompeii and Herculaneum at the British Museum this March, there couldn’t be a more inspiring time to visit Italy’s Bay of Naples.

For some of the most spectacular views of Mount Etna, we recommend a stay at the glamorous Grand Hotel Timeo which sits high in Sicily’s cliff-top town of Taormina. Whilst here, you’ve got to sample their famous “smoking martini” (just as fiery and unpredictable as its birthplace!) and then you’re in for an eruption of spicy flavours as you explore Sicily’s unique cuisine.

For an equally dramatic – but very different experience – Taormina is also home to a Greek-Roman theatre which has a stunning location on top of the cliffs, and plays host to a film festival every June.

After your time in Sicily, we recommend heading over to Aeolian Archipelago and exploring its seven very unique islands. Here you can wallow in hot sulphur mud-baths; enjoy beautiful coastal walks above splintered volcanic rocks, and party the night away at smoking-hot Hotel Raya which has stunning views towards Stromboli.
