This weekend, festivities commemorating the famous storming of the Bastille will be taking place all over France, with Paris playing host to many of the grandest, most extravagant and most explosive.
In the morning of July 14th , the oldest and largest military parade in Europe takes place in front of the President of the Republic. Following the foot parades and motorcades on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, the aircrafts of the Patrouille de France perform a spectacular flypast, bringing the party to the sky above with incredible aerobatics routines.
In the afternoon, the beautiful Château de Versailles park invites visitors to enjoy Le déjeuner sur l'herbe, ‘Lunch on the Grass’, on the banks of the Grand Canal. The white dress code gives the afternoon a touch of je ne sais quoi as only the French know how, and the Grandes Eaux Musicales, ‘Musical Fountains’, truly are something special. Throughout the day, brass bands will be livening up the banks of the canal, orchestras will be play traditional French music and, as you would expect from the French capital, regional producers will be showing off their wonderful specialities.
Elsewhere, there is free entrance to the ballet at the Opéra de Paris, the Louvre and the garden party at the Longchamp racecourse - but it as the sun goes down that things really get going.
The ‘kings of the night’, the local fireman, open up their stations for lively Fireman’s balls, where the fun lasts well into the early hours of the morning - though the highlight of Bastille Day is the spectacular evening fireworks display at the Bassins du Trocadéro. Crowds gather at the Eiffel Tower and along the Champ-de-Mars to watch fireworks light up the Parisian night, and with a theme of 1970s and 1980s ‘Disco years’, this year’s display promises to close the celebrations in style.
