Hotel Overview

Sense of place

The train itself evokes colonial splendour and the beauty of storied trains like the Orient Express, while the places it will take you to – including the likes of Singapore, Bangkok, and the Cameron Highlands – need no introduction and are among the most romantic travel destinations in the world.

Rooms onboard the Eastern & Oriental Express

The train's beautiful cabins combine the Old World elegance of the golden age of train travel with Asian design, such as latticed bamboo detailing on the walls. By day, your cabin is a comfortable lounge, with a sofa from which you can watch the landscapes passing by outside your window. By night, it converts into a plush bedroom, with either a bunk, twin or single arrangement.

Food & drink

Dining aboard the Eastern & Oriental is an atmospheric experience, with a range of top-quality Asian and international dishes served in the train’s opulent dining car. Australian chef Luke Mangan oversees an ever-changing menu, with sample dishes including spicy rendang curries, accompanied by Thai coffee and tea from the Cameron Highlands, and fresh exotic fruit. Lunch and dinner are served in the restaurant car, and an extensive breakfast spread is served in your cabin each morning. The bar car is a sociable spot to enjoy a beer, glass of wine or cocktail to the accompaniment of the resident pianist.

Facilities

In addition to the bar and restaurant cars, the Eastern & Oriental has a saloon car which is well-stocked with books, magazines and board games and is the perfect place to while away a few hours. Within the saloon car there’s a boutique, where you can pick up souvenirs of your journey. At the rear of the train is the teak-panelled observation car, where you can watch the world go by during the day and enjoy a cocktail by night in true colonial style. A steward is at your beck and call 24 hours a day to ensure your journey is as comfortable as possible.

Activities onboard the Eastern & Oriental Express

The Eastern & Oriental Express runs a number of routes throughout Southeast Asia. For the adventurously minded, the Fables of the Peninsula trip begins in Singapore and takes you into the heart of Malaysia, stopping off at Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands, and Penang, before finishing up in Thailand’s Huay Yang. Shorter 2 and 3-night itineraries run between Bangkok and Singapore, including guided cruises along the iconic River Kwai and guided tours of Malaysia’s Kuala Kangsar.
