Bill Bensley, self-proclaimed wacky architect, is the designer of some of the most iconic hotels in the world. With his refusal to be ‘boring’, each hotel is unique and distinctive. From imaginary universities to treetop camps, Bensley is determined to change the way people think about hotels. His mission? To turn each hotel into its own new and exciting experience, resulting in creations that seamlessly combine sophistication and imagination to build something truly special. Here are some of our favourite Bensley creations.
Shinta Mani Wild, Cambodia
Shinta Mani Wild is a stunning addition to the Bill Bensley stable, and takes glamping to a whole new level. Its stylish tents sit along a 1.5km stretch of river in the heart of the Cambodian jungle between three national parks, offering beautiful interiors and views. Each tent has been created by Bensley himself to provide a unique experience, from colourful sofas to terraces with freestanding tubs where you can relax and take in the views.
Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle, Thailand
Set on a hillside above the Ruak River in Thailand, at the award-winning Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle, you can be guaranteed a room with a view. Furnished with hardwood floors, custom-made hand-beaten copper baths and lots of open space, Bensley achieves a cosy and luxurious environment that makes you feel part of the nature that surrounds you. He carefully chooses locations to give guests the best possible experience, and the Four Seasons is no exception. If you can drag yourself away, this is a great base for interacting with the rescued elephants of Chiang Rai.
Shinta Mani Angkor - Bensley Collection, Cambodia
The Shinta Mani Angkor - Bensley Collection is the creme de la creme of Bensley hotels, which showcases the heights of luxury and the signature Bensley style for some serious holiday indulgence. The 10 beautiful Art Deco-style two-storey villas come with their own Bensley Butlers to take care of your every need, alongside plush beds with tailor-made Khmer-inspired bed sheets, private pools and bathtubs on the terrace, where you can bathe under the stars. You can even set up a bed beneath the stars if you wish!
JW Marriott Phu Quoc, Vietnam
Perhaps one of Bensley’s most exciting ventures, the JW Marriott Phu Quoc redefines what it means to be a hotel. More of an attraction than your typical hotel, this brightly-coloured retreat takes inspiration from the alleged 19th-century Lamarck University, and reimagines it in a way only Bensley can, with buildings posing as academic departments and even statues of the university mascots to guard the front door.
The Siam, Bangkok, Thailand
A Bangkok landmark, The Siam combines Thai culture with modern design to create a chic boutique hotel. Bensley designed this hotel to have lots of open space and fewer rooms, to create a more intimate and private setting that feels a world away from the busy streets of Bangkok. The rooms are adorned with hand-picked Oriental artwork and antiques so that each one provides a different experience to the next.
Capella Ubud, Indonesia
Inspired by the European settlers from the 1800s, Bensley has designed a camp with a story. Up in the treetops of Indonesia's Keliki Valley, at the Capella Ubud Bensley uses minimalist design and traditional décor to take you back into the past for a stay that becomes more of an adventure. Refusing to destruct the nature surrounding it, he has carefully designed only 22 rooms amongst the trees for an almost unspoilt experience of the lush green forests this camp sits in.
The Slate, Phuket, Thailand
The Slate is a luxury hotel in Phuket that pays homage to the tin mining industry that bought Phuket to the foreground in Thailand. Bensley fuses elements of the area's tin mining history with traditional Thai décor to create something that is truly unique. Sitting on Nai Yang Beach, The Slate will take you a world away from the rest of Phuket, and with additional attractions such as three separate pools, you can be assured that no expense has been spared in creating a hotel that is luxurious as well as interesting.
