South Africa's got the lot: captivating cities, inspiring landscapes, stunning wildlife seen from divine lodges, and a decent glass of wine or two, so we're told. This is the kind of place you'll need to visit more than once, so take your time and saunter along the beautiful Garden Route, don't leave the Kruger until you've ticked off The Big Five and allow Cape Town several days to work its magic – you won't be disappointed.
Cape Town
An unrivalled setting along the Cape Peninsula’s mountainous spine with show-stopping views to the Atlantic: this city merits all the attention. The Cape Grace, is our top pick, its waterfront location is superb.
Garden Route
There’s a temptation to rush along this beautiful coastal plain between Mossel Bay and Storms River mouth, but we suggest to take your time to explore its mountains, forests and secluded coves.
Eastern Cape
Often unfairly overlooked, the Eastern Cape has a lot to offer including the Addo Elephant Park and malaria-free safari, making it a great place to for families at the end of the Garden Route.
Greater Kruger
Kruger’s world famous reputation for superlative wildlife viewing is wholly justified. A cast of thousands of game await you in this strip of land that hugs the Mozambique border with Sabi Sands as the icing on the cake. We love Chitwa Chitwa in the Sabi Sands.
Kwazulu-Natal
A culturally rich province, home to a beautiful coastline, excellent malaria-free wildlife viewing and battlefields telling of South Africa’s gruesome 19th century history. Black and White Rhino are found here, too.
Madikwe Game Reserve
A reintroduction programme has transformed this vast reserve on the Botswana border into a haven for wildlife. The Big Five are in residence as well as hyena, giraffe, cheetah and wild dog. It’s malaria-free, too. Take a look at Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge or Morukuru in the heart of the reserve.
Winelands & Whales
Between July and November, South Africa has some world-class whale watching, so head to Hermanus to get up close to the friendly Southern Right Whales. Not far away are the Winelands, where you can stay on a vineyard and sample South Africa’s finest wines among beautiful scenery. Our Wine, Battlefields and Wildlife itinerary takes you to some superb hotels and vineyards.
Train Journeys
The Blue Train and Rovos Rail capture the romance of travelling by rail with some of South Africa’s most breathtaking scenery. Talk to our travel experts about the various itineraries on offer and then just sit back, relax and enjoy the view.
