Little-visited Malawi is a real treat with arguably the most friendly people on the continent and a beguiling low-key charm. Lake Malawi gets all the attention and rightly so; a dazzling inland sea of crystal waters teeming with tropical fish and surrounded by sandy beaches, taking up almost a fifth of the county's territory. Combine the lake with a journey south to the beautiful Liwonde National Park for excellent elephant, hippo, and occasional leopard viewing - as well as some seriously huge crocodiles.

Liwonde National Park
Liwonde National Park may not have the game to rival such giants as the Maasai Mara, but what it lacks in game, it certainly makes up for in natural beauty and a quintessentially African atmosphere. Warthogs graze in front of your tent during the day, while hippos grunt outside it at night and elephant, crocodile and antelope are the stars of daily game drives.
The Lake
Few countries are so dominated by one geographical feature as Malawi by its great lake. Enclosed by mountains and edged by beautiful white sand beaches swaying with palms, this the perfect spot to unwind after a safari. Malawi’s fantastic music scene is showcased here in October each year at ‘The Lake of Stars Festival’, with acclaimed musicians from Malawi and the world coming to town and performing live on the lakeshore.
