Sugar Loaf & Salt Flats | Brazil, Chile & Bolivia | 15 nights
The journey across Bolivia’s blindingly white salt flats dotted with multi-coloured lakes, giant cacti and black granite rocks used to be a backpacker-only route. Not any more. This adventurous itinerary takes in Rio, the Atacama Desert and on to Bolivia in customary Exsus style.
Perfect for… an adventurous spirit is a pre-requisite for this beautiful but unforgiving territory.
When to go… between June and October.
Consider… this trip takes you to altitudes of over 4500m so you’ll need the four nights of acclimatisation in the Atacama Desert before beginning the journey.
- Fly over night to Rio de Janeiro and wake up in one of the world’s most beautiful cities staying at the Fasano Rio. Three nights here should be enough to take in the highlights with our excellent local guide. The views from Sugar Loaf Mountain are a must.
- From Rio we fly you across the continent to Santiago de Chile, where you spend one night before beginning tomorrow’s adventure.
- A flight from Santiago to Calama lands you in Chile’s arid north. From here, it’s a 90 minute drive to the Atacama Desert, the driest place on earth. Your four nights at the excellent Explora hotel are spent exploring lunar landscapes, geysers and volcanoes by foot and horseback.
- Fully acclimatised and ready for your next adventure, you begin your journey to Bolivia's Uyuni Salt Flats with the exceptional Explora guides. Be ready for scenery so surreal you’ll have to pinch yourself; your five nights of accommodation are camping Explora-style with plenty of hot water and gourmet meals.
- The final days of this magnificent journey see you heading back into Chile through more superlative altiplano scenery. You arrive finally in Iquique for one night in local hotel.
- The next day, we fly you back down to Santiago, where you check in to a luxury hotel with spa and pool for a night’s rest.
- Finally, we fly you back home full of stories to tell your friends and proud in having achieved one of South America’s great journeys.
