| | | | Victoria House | | The Belize Barrier Reef - the second longest in the world - lies close to the coast, making it easily accesible for scuba divers. For those with experience it is possible to go further afield and dive the famous Blue Hole, a vast underwater cavern. Belize is also famous for its cays - the string of little islands, some no more than sand bars, which cover 212 sq miles along the reef.
Ambergris Caye is one of the largest, and on its southern tip is Victoria House, the perfect beach retreat, built plantation-style in 20 acres of grounds. Snorkelling and scuba are the big things there, with the underwater Hol Chan Marine Park nearby, but if you prefer sightseeing out of the water, take a day trip to the mainland to visit the Mayan ruins of Lamanai or Altun Ha.
