| | | | La Lancha | | After two thousand years of being covered by jungle and watched over only by spider monkeys, the ruins of the ancient city of Tikal have now been partially revealed: an astounding 3,000 temples, shrines, terraces, plazas and stone monuments, most of them still buried deep in the rainforest.
The whole area is now a National Park, and the latest Francis Ford Coppola hotel, La Lancha, is the place to stay. 50 minutes from Tikal itself, with just 10 rooms nestling amongst the jungle overlooking Lake Peten Itza, each decorated with typical Guatemalan fabrics. The hotel has a swimming pool, bikes to rent for exploring the area and an open-air restaurant. Listen out for the howler monkeys at dawn!
