| | | | Casa de Sierra Nevada | | San Miguel de Allende is a charming old town on a steep hillside facing the broad sweep of the Rio Laja and the distant blue of the Guanajuato mountains. Its twisting cobbled streets rise in terraces to the mineral spring of El Chorro, from which the blue and yellow tiled cupolas of some twenty churches can be seen. Long popular with bohemian ex-pats, San Miguel has a lively arts scene and is a great place to pick up quality Mexican arts & crafts.
Along some of the most typical streets of downtown San Miguel de Allende, six mansions, originally built in the 16th century, make up one of México´s most cosmopolitan hotels, Casa de Sierra Nevada. Recently taken over by Orient Express, its arches, wide windows, patios, fountains and immaculate gardens make for a perfect retreat. It is also a great choice for foodies: the hotel has a cooking school attached, Sazon, offering classes in traditional Mexican cooking.
