Peru by Rail and River | Peru | 13 nights
See the best of Peru from dizzyingly high mountains to a slow boat along a jungle river. We include the classic train journey to Machu Picchu on board the Orient Express-owned Hiram Bingham and a 4 night cruise through Peru’s tropical rainforest.
Perfect for… this trip’s got a little bit of everything, rail, river, an ancient Inca site and Amazon wildlife. What’s not to like?
When to go… it gets a little wet at Machu Picchu January to March, but not enough to put us off.
Consider… need something static? Pop up to Central America or across to Brazil for some motionless beach time.
- Fly into Lima, where you’ll spend a night in a comfortable bed getting some rest ahead of tomorrow’s adventure.
- From Lima, it’s an hour’s flight to the Andes and the Sacred Valley of the Incas for three nights in a private villa surrounded by beautiful mountains and rural little villages. We’ll organise day trips for you from walking to little-visited Inca sites to white-water rafting during your three night stay.
- Board the Hiram Bingham train at Poroy for one of the world’s most magnificent train journeys. The train cuts through the Andes past rivers, tiny villages and weary trekkers to reach Machu Picchu.
- Spend a day exploring this most famous of all Inca sites then over night at the Sanctuary Lodge right at the gates to Machu Picchu. You’ll have the place to yourseld the following morning.
- The next evening, take the Hiram Bingham back to Poroy. You’ll be treated to cocktails and a four-course dinner is served on board.
- You’ll be met at the other end and transferred to Cuzco, one time capital of the Inca Empire and one of Latin America’s most compelling cities. Take an oxygenated room at the Monasterio for three nights and explore the fascinating history, Inca-meets-Spanish architecture and buzzing nightlife the city has to offer.
- From Cuzco, you now descend several thousand metres on your flight to Iquitos in Peru’s tropical jungle lowlands. Board the luxurious M/VAqua for four nights of cruising through the pristine wilderness of the Amazon Basin with an expert naturalist guide to uncover its secrets.
- At the end of your cruise, you’re transferred back to Iquitos for a flight back to Lima, where you spend one night.
- The next morning, we’ll fly you home or onwards to your next destination.
