When to go

Brazil is an all year round destination, but the big decision should be based on the Pantanal. Dry season is from May/June to October and there is more wildlife at this time. In the wet season the landscapes are amazing and sunsets are even more beautiful. And it’s malaria-free too!

Consider

We've kicked off this itinerary in a residential part of Rio, so that you can get a feel for how the Brazilians really live. If, however, you're after some old-school glamour it's got to be the Copacabana Palace.

  1. 1
    RIO – 3 nights
Having flown from London to Rio, you’ll spend three nights at the coffee plantation mansion, Santa Teresa. Set high above the bay in the trendy bohemian district, you can hop on one of the famous yellow trams, or pop in to the collection of artsy shops. Don’t worry though: you’ll still be close enough to all the action, whether it's a football match at the Maracana stadium, the world famous carnival, or just a cooling coconut water on Ipanema beach.
  2. 2
    IGUASSU – 2 nights
From the buzz and excitement of Rio you will fly to Iguassu and stay at Das Cataratas. Here you can go on a boat safari which involves a drive through the subtropical forest and a high speed boat ride to the base of the falls. Warning: you will get drenched! Visit both the Argentinean and Brazilian sides of the falls and take a helicopter ride for a spectacular bird’s eye view.

  3. 3
    PANTANAL – 3 nights
From Iguassu, you’ll fly to the Pantanal where you’ll spend three nights at Caiman Lodge. Made up of seasonally flooded savannahs and tropical forests, and home to anteaters, anaconda, jaguars, and over 600 species of bird, this is an unbelievable place to explore. Most expeditions are on horseback or open jeep, but piranha fishing and canoeing down the river are just some of the other options.

  4. 4
    SALVADOR – 2 nights
Spend two nights at Villa Bahia in Salvador’s historic Pelourinho, with views over rooftops, bell-towers, and colourful facades. This is a fascinating place to soak up the days of Portuguese empire, with churches to explore and samba classes nearby.
  5. 5
    ILHEUS – 3 nights
Now for glorious beach-time, with three relaxing nights at Fazenda de Lagoa. Nestled within a coconut grove, this funky beach lodge has an endless stretch of white sand beach for kayaking, surfing, and riding. Top off your Brazilian adventure (and tan!) before flying back to London.
