Couples and design lovers looking for a romantic yet modern hideaway.
At the end of an unpaved road in the laid-back beach resort of Tulum, an hour and a half south of Cancun airport, Mexico.
At Be Tulum there are just 20 suites housed in two story thatched buildings shaded by tropical palms. Upper level rooms have a large jacuzzi tub inside the bedroom and balconies and ground floor have plunge pools and terraces. The two stunning penthouses come complete with private rooftop pools and views over the Caribbean. Décor is pared back luxury – limestone, thatch and hardwood with accents of local handmade textiles.
The focal point of the hotel is the funky split level Beach Club and Lounge Bar, where you can sip freshly squeezed tropical juices (rum optional) and indulge in the freshest fish tacos overlooking the glass sided swimming pool and out over the mesmerisingly blue Caribbean sea. Spa treatments can also be organised on the beach or in the privacy of your room.
Grab one of the hotels bikes for a short ride into the main town where you’ll find friendly locals, low-key restaurants and typical Mexican handicrafts. For something a little different, try a night tour to the ruins in the archaeological site of Tulum, located on top of a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Or, if that sounds too energetic the powder soft white beach is just a few steps away.
Tulum means ‘Wall’ in the Mayan language, but the original name was Zamá, meaning Dawn: an apt name given the town’s geographic advantage for truly beautiful sunrises.
