Perfect for

Seeing another side of Africa: a land of beguiling beauty and delightful people.

When to go

We’d avoid the rains and travel between May and October.

Consider

For the wild rugged outdoors, fly up to the Nyika Plateau and spend some time at Chelinda. Alternatively if you just can’t get enough game viewing, take advantage of the direct flights between Lilongwe and Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park.

  1. 1
    BLANTYRE
Fly into Blantyre, via a quick plane change in Johannesburg. Your driver will be waiting to meet you with a huge smile (we’ve never met a Malawian who didn’t).
  2. 2
    THYOLO
Drive down to the highland tea plantations near Thyolo, a fascinating journey through rural Africa. Spend four nights at lovely Huntingdon House, relaxing into the slow African pace of life.  Sit with a book under the trees, snuggle up beside the fire in the evenings, and take a potter through the tea estate.  If you want to stretch your legs, there’s also mountain biking, trips to Mount Mulanje, and  tours of the tea and coffee plantations
  3. 3
    MVUU LODGE
After your peaceful days at Huntingdon House, we’ll drive you east for four hours to spend three nights at Mvuu Lodge. If the magnificent birdlife at Huntingdon House wasn’t enough, this should really impress you. And if birds aren’t your bag, there are herds of ellies and pods of hippos (amongst a whole host of other big game) to keep you entertained.
  4. 4
    LAKE MALAWI
A three hour drive takes you from Mvuu Lodge down to the shores of Lake Malawi. This has the wild rugged beauty of a Scottish loch, combined with tropical African sunshine and the azure waters of the Caribbean. Spend five nights at Danforth Yachting. Swim, water-ski, windsurf and snorkel to your heart’s content. While you’re here, we’d also recommend taking a cycle ride through the surrounding villages.

  5. 5
    LILONGWE
At the end of your stay, drive back to Lilongwe and from here fly down to Johannesburg for your overnight flight home.
