Namibia is the perfect road-trip country. There are miles of decent roads and breathtaking scenery at every turn. Drive through rugged mountains, past a sea of rolling sand dunes, and across the endless Etosha salt pan. Stop to snap elephants bathing in the waterholes, to radio-track leopard at Okonjima, and to kayak with the seals at Swakopmund. This is the best of Namibia in one glorious journey.

Freedom and flexibility.
The easiest driving’s usually between May and October, but adventurers will love the drama of the rainer months between January and March, when spectacular storms can make for sudden diversions, and theatrical photographs.
Committed safari-addicts might like to add on a few days in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, while cool city-kids can fly home via the restaurants and beaches of Cape Town.

1
WINDHOEK
Fly overnight from London to Windhoek, changing in either Cape Town or Johannesburg along the way. Spend a night in town, perhaps taking the opportunity to visit one of the local townships, or try the legendary steak at Joe’s.
2
SOSSUSVLEI
In the morning, set off with your supply of biltong (an almost obligatory snack on a Namibian road-trip) for the stunning sand sea at Sossusvlei. Spend two nights at Kulala Desert Lodge. We’d recommend an early start to see the sunrise over the dunes, and a visit to see the petrified forest at Dead Vlei.
3
SWAKOPMUND
From here, follow the road north to Swakopmund, for two nights at Villa Margherita. Take a kayak out to see the seal colony, enjoy some of the area’s delicious seafood restaurants, and take a wander along the town’s wide colonial streets.
4
DAMARALAND
Leaving Swakopmund, drive on to Damaraland. By this time you’ll think you’ll have seen all of the stunning scenery that Namibia can throw at you, but prepare to have your breath taken away yet again. Damaraland’s rugged beauty presents a photo opportunity at every turn. Wandering amongst the grand rocky formations are rare desert elephants, and two nights is ideal.
5
ETOSHA PAN
The road from Damaraland leads you on to the vast, empty Etosha Pan. This is wildlife-central. We’d suggest basing yourself for two nights at Ongava Lodge and heading out on game drives to the waterholes, where an impressive variety of animals can be seen- impalas and zebras jostle shoulder-to-shoulder, giraffe look nervously around for lions as they bend to drink, and families of elephants revel in the mud.
6
CENTRAL HIGHLANDS
Waving goodbye to Etosha, you’ll move on to a different kind of wildlife experience, with two nights further south at the legendary Okonjima. Children and adults alike will delight in a stay here, learning about the work of the AfriCat Foundation. There’s the chance to see cheetahs up close, radio-track leopards, and track rehabilitated hyena on foot.
7
WINDHOEK
At the end of your stay, you’ll head back to Windhoek, for your overnight flight back to London via Johannesburg or Cape Town.
